Course Objective

The participants in this course will obtain a thorough understanding of the principles of the Maltese education law, along with a comprehensive understanding of the association between data privacy and the education field.

This programme shall present the students with an overview of the laws regulating Education and data protection in Malta. In it the student will be exposed not only to the Education and the Data Protection Acts, and other legislation directly related to the sectors, but also to case law interpreting, highlighting, and crystallizing these two essential areas of law.

This course contributes towards the Accelerated Progression Scheme for educators as per the Sectoral Agreement signed in 2017.

2 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better, and 3 Intermediate level subjects at Grade C or better. 1 of any of these subjects must be Maltese or English

OR

3 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better OR Mature/Adult Learning Student (must be 23 when course starts) subject to an interview by the Head of the Academy.

Participants will complete a self-assessment examination, where they will assess themselves on certain questions  at the start of the unit and compare their answers to the same questions at the end of the unit.

Participants must also complete 1 out of a choice of 3 assignment titles.

At the end of the study programme the participants will be able to:

  • Clearly comprehend instructions regarding what sort of research or work would be necessary for them to carry out;
  • Compile their findings and conclusions in a clear and concise manner which can be easily comprehended by their superiors;
  • Explain with clarity and attention to detail their findings and conclusions orally if so required and express themselves in a professional and agreeable manner.
  • Conduct independent research on education law, jurisprudence, and other sources as required;
  • Recognise issues which arise at law related to the education field;
  • Advance their knowledge further in an independent manner.
  • Understand Data Protection law (with an emphasis on issue related to Educational Institutions)
Accreditations
The Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA) deems this Award to be at Level 5 in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
