Throughout this study programme, participants will be guided through the most salient aspects of one of the most unique of all fields of law. Criminal legislation is one of the most essential cornerstones of society, ensuring security within a specific jurisdiction and, at times, across borders.

What types of offences exist and what may ultimately constitute such an offence. A main understanding of several offences will be drawn, whilst also analysing concepts of penalties which go along with them. Participants will therefore gain a basic yet thorough outlook of the very principles the Criminal Code aims to safeguard within Maltese society, and how the judiciary attempts to interpret and apply the offence contemplated within it.

Training will be provided through 7 lectures of 3 hours each, held in-class. The course will be interactive, where participants are free to ask questions, discuss and share ideas or experiences.

Who should attend?

Anyone interested to understand Criminal Law, court employees, court reporters and those working in law enforcement.

Entry Requirements

2 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better, and 3 Intermediate level subjects at Grade C or better. 1 of any of these subjects must be Maltese or English

OR

3 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better

OR

Mature/Adult Learning Student (must be 23 when course starts) subject to an interview by the Head of the Academy.

Mode Of Assessment

There will be two assignments and students will have a choice – they will be able to choose 2 assignments out of 4.

Learning Outcomes

  • The general principles of local criminal law;
  • The different sections of the Criminal Code and how they apply;
  • A thorough understanding of the different categories of offences;
  • The nature of the criminal offence in itself;
  • The status of the accused;
  • An overview of some of the main offences in Maltese law;
  • Possible defences which may be evoked;
  • The workings of the courts of criminal jurisdiction;
  • Judgments of the latter courts;
  • Comparative analyses with congruent principles from foreign criminal jurisdictions
  • The ability to analyse local criminal law and locate specific provisions in the Criminal Code;
  • The autonomy to interpret such provisions and provide a rationale behind them.
Accreditations
The Malta Further and Higher Education Authority deems this Award to be at Level 5 in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
