Today’s Times of Malta editorial served as inspiration for this.
Eurostat’s 2022 data reveals that a mere 12.8% of Maltese citizens aged 25–64 engaged in education or training, a stark contrast to the European Pillar of Social Rights’ target of 60% adult participation in training annually by 2030. This statistic underlines a critical gap in lifelong learning and skills development, leaving a significant portion of our population ill-equipped to compete on a global scale.
At 21 Academy, we believe education must transcend the outdated notion of being merely a pathway to employment that concludes in early adulthood. Instead, education should be a lifelong journey—an opportunity to grow, adapt, and thrive in an ever-evolving world. Our mission is to empower individuals at all stages of life, ensuring they remain resilient, employable, and socially included while enriching their personal lives.
A lack of skills and continuous education exposes adults to greater risks of unemployment, social exclusion, and vulnerability, particularly as they age. Therefore, we see it as our duty to foster a culture that values and prioritises lifelong learning. Through accessible, inclusive programmes and information on funding opportunities, we aim to remove barriers such as financial constraints, which often deter adults from pursuing further education.
Employers also have a vested interest in championing lifelong learning. By investing in their workforce’s education, organisations can cultivate a culture of innovation, adaptability, and growth. Employees who engage in continuous learning are better equipped to handle change, embrace new technologies, and respond to evolving industry demands. Moreover, businesses benefit from increased productivity, improved employee retention, and a stronger competitive edge in the marketplace. Supporting lifelong learning sends a powerful message of care and commitment to employees, enhancing morale and fostering loyalty.
At 21 Academy, we advocate for education as the cornerstone of societal progress. By investing in lifelong learning, we equip people not only with the skills to remain relevant in their careers but also with the tools to address contemporary global challenges, such as climate change. Our vision is to inspire individuals to embrace continuous learning as a means to contribute meaningfully to society, while achieving personal fulfilment and growth.
Education is the greatest investment a society can make in its people—and at 21 Academy, we are committed to leading the way in making lifelong education a reality for all.
